Is your door lock getting stuck? Are you finding it harder to open your door with a key? If so, you might be experiencing a broken lock problem or malfunctioning lock mechanism. To ensure your property is safe and protected, it’s vital to get this looked at as soon as possible.

In this article, we’ll discuss 5 common lock problems that occur and what you can do to fix the issue promptly.

Incorrect Latch Assembly

If your door latch is loose, not fixed in position or out of alignment, your door latch and strike plate may not be working in synchronicity together.

How to fix it? One of the ways to fix this is by tightening the door hinge screws and making adjustments to the strike plate through disabling some of the screws. You can then shift the door into position and lock the latch into place. This should do the trick.

Broken Keys

Over time our keys can deteriorate due to normal wear and tear. If your key is not turning in the lock or is showing signs of bending and crookedness, you may want to throw it away and get yourself a new one. Furthermore, if you’re constantly attempting to open the door with a faulty key, this could potentially cause some damage to the inner mechanisms of the lock – which may cost you $$$ to replace.

How to fix it? If using another key resolves the lock issue, then at least you know a brand new key will fix the issue. If the problem is inside the actual lock mechanism and not key related, try lubricating the lock itself and tighten the door hinge screws for quick results.

Loose Locks

With daily use and turning, door locks have a tendency to become loose and flimsy.

Loose locks are much more common with interior doors that are used on a regular basis - such as pull handles and lever locksets. A slipped locking mechanism is also a clear indication that your internal components are misaligned.

How to fix it? Dismantle the door handles and attempt to realign the knobs on either side by either taping it in place it or having a family member hold this for you. This will allow you to tighten the new screws until it’s completely flush with the door and connected in properly.

Frozen Locks

Frozen locks occur in very cold climates where there is a higher propensity for moisture to get trapped inside the lock mechanism – causing the lock to freeze.  If you find yourself in this situation and you’re having difficulty sliding your key into the door to open it, don’t force it to happen. It can cause more damage than good.

How to fix it? Try and warm it up using either a hairdryer, hot towel or heat pack. This will melt the ice inside it and assist in loosening the frozen lock. Alternatively, you may need to call a professional such as Lockrite Locksmiths to restore your door lock mechanism and prevent any further damage.

Dirty Locks

Jammed locks or deadbolts can be caused by excess dirt build up and dust particles over time. Exterior doors are most prone to this problem because of the direct exposure to the outside elements.

How to fix it? Using a powdered graphite solution or Teflon product can help with dislodging any blockages inside the lock. If that doesn’t work, investing in a stronger commercial cleaner /spray will clear up whatever is lurking inside the deadbolt.
